More goals in Amstermdam

Despite a few scares, the Netherlands were able to win their opening game against their toughest opponents in Group C. They beat Ukraine 3-2 having blown a 2-0 lead in the clash, which shows the issues which underline Frank De Boer’s side.

The Dutch have plenty of talent and they used that well in their opener, but doubts remain about De Boer’s ability at the top level. However, with two home games against Austria and North Macedonia up next, the Dutch should be strong enough to make the last 16.

Meanwhile, Austria were frustrated for much of the game against North Macedonia before scoring twice in the last 12 minutes to win 3-1. There’s clearly a lot of attacking talent in this Austria side and they should hurt the Dutch considering how they struggled against Ukraine, but the hosts have scored at least twice in their last eight so both teams to score is the best value bet given it has landed in five of Austria’s last six competitive matches.

Dutch to maintain great start

Austria may have beaten North Macedonia but things only get harder in their remaining games, which doesn’t bode well following defeats to Denmark and England in their last four. The Austrians have lost four of their last seven European Championship games and they look vulnerable in Amsterdam.

The Dutch have won their last four home games, scoring three goals in three of those matches. They should prove too strong for an Austria side who will find the shift in opposition difficult. As a result, a 3-1 home win is our correct score prediction.

Weghorst making a massive impact

The Dutch set-up for the win over Ukraine was interesting, with De Boer choosing to play a back-three in order to pair Memphis Depay with Wout Weghorst. The Wolfsburg striker put in a brilliant display and rewarded De Boer with a second-half goal, following up his great club form.

Weghorst scored 20 Bundesliga goals in just 33 appearances this term and the forward has scored in consecutive matches for his national side. He’s a new introduction to the Dutch squad but having settled so well we are backing Weghorst to score again against a vulnerable Austrian defence.

Azzurri live up to the billing

Italy were heavily backed in the lead up to the start of Euro 2020 and they certainly didn’t disappoint their backers at the Stadio Olimpico on Friday. They controlled the game throughout against Turkey and ran out comfortable 3-0 winners, and I expect a similarly impressive showing against Switzerland on Wednesday.

Once again the Italians will enjoy home advantage as they line up at the Stadio Olimpico and Roberto Mancini’s side will be in high spirits following their opener. They passed their opponents to death on Friday and fully deserved their ninth win to nil in a row.

Switzerland rue missed chances

Switzerland will still be wondering how they didn’t come away with three points in their opener. They controlled the game against Wales in Baku, squandering a host of chances before finally opening the scoring early in the second-half only for Kieffer Moore to grab a somewhat undeserved equaliser.

That ended a run of six wins in a row for Switzerland, but their chances of returning to winning ways look slim. They haven’t beaten Italy since 1993 and while they have only lost half of their eight meetings since then, this Italy side looks like the real deal.

Immobile to shine for Italy

They head into this clash unbeaten in 28 games, with 23 of those ending in victory and an incredible 21 clean sheets. They were one of two teams to qualify for Euro 2020 with a perfect record and it’s hard to see past them here.

I’m backing a straight Italy win, and another clean sheet could be on the cards. Five of those nine wins to nil in a row came by a 2-0 scoreline, and that’s what I’m tipping as a correct score prediction.

Once again, Ciro Immobile makes the cut for our anytime goalscorer predictions. He deservedly found the net against Turkey and has now scored in four of his last five appearances for Italy. He’s coming off the back of a 25-goal season with Lazio and will be a real threat to this Switzerland defence.

Pre-tournament disruption becoming the norm for Spain

It’s certainly not been the smoothest of preparations for Luis Enrique’s Spain as they approach the start of their Euro 2020 campaign, with Sergio Busquets’ positive Covid-19 test throwing their entire build-up into disarray.

Spain had to send their Under-21 squad to play their final pre-tournament friendly and they’ve basically been training individually since the Busquets news broke, and in the last few days Diego Llorente became the second player to test positive. It could have been better, but nothing trumps three years ago when the Spanish FA sacked Julen Lopetegui a day before the start of the World Cup.

Busquets’ leadership will undoubtedly be missed for Spain, but they still have a squad more than capable of dealing with the threat of Sweden and their home advantage in this opener should allow them to get the win. That being said, they’re unlikely to have it all their own way.

Swedes pose a threat going forward

Sweden may be without Zlatan Ibrahimovic but in Alexander Isak and Marcus Berg they have a formidable striking partnership and Albin Ekdal and Emil Forsberg are more than capable of providing them with the bullets to fire.

The result has been plenty of goals for Sweden. They have won their last five games and scored 14 in their last seven, including two away to France. They should have more than enough about them to challenge this Spanish defence but keeping them out at the other end could prove a little trickier.

Torres can help Spain to three points

Spain may not have the superstars of years gone by, but their squad has plenty of talented youngsters and one of those is Manchester City’s Ferran Torres. He’s our tip for the UEFA Young Player of the Tournament and has scored six goals in 11 appearances for his country.

The 21-year-old bagged a hat-trick at Newcastle towards the end of the Premier League season and has scored in three of his last five appearances for Spain, including a hat-trick in their 6-0 drubbing of Germany. He’s my pick for an anytime goalscorer bet.

As far as the overall result goes I’m predicting goals at both ends after Spain conceded in six of their last eight, not including that Under-21 friendly against Lithuania. Sweden have lost four of their last five away games, though, so a 2-1 win for the Spaniards looks a good choice for a correct score prediction.

North Macedonia can cause problems

North Macedonia make history as they kick-off their first ever major tournament match on Sunday. They qualified by winning the play-offs in group D of the UEFA Nations League, earning them a place at this summer’s tournament.

They come in as the big underdogs, but this is a landmark moment for North Macedonia. It comes on the back of another major moment for them – a 2-1 victory at Germany in World Cup qualifying earlier this year. That result proved that Igor Angelovski’s side can cause problems for anyone.

We’re backing North Macedonia to make Austria worry in this clash. While the Austrians took six points off these opponents in qualifying for this tournament, things have changed for the pair in the build up to this one and we expect an even clash.

Outsiders won’t park the bus

North Macedonia’s rise isn’t due to stodgy, uninspiring football. Angelovski makes his men push forward, suggesting that the most important thing for him is that his team push forward and entertain. Having scored 14 goals in five matches in 2021, it’s clearly paying off.

These two met in qualifying for this tournament, with Austria picking up two vital wins on their way to booking their place. However, both teams scored in each of those encounters. North Macedonia scored in eight of their final nine qualifying games, while nine of their last 13 matches have seen both teams score.

We’re backing BTTS when these two meet in Romania, with Austria expected to take the initiative in what is seen as their most winnable group game. North Macedonia won’t sit back and with eight goals shared between the two in the last two meetings both teams to score is well priced.

Eyes on Elmas

Napoli’s Eljif Elmas is a player who could catch the eye this summer and the technically gifted midfielder comes into the tournament in form. He’s scored three goals in his last four for the national side. That includes a strike against Germany in World Cup qualifying and he’s now central to everything they do.

Elmas will get space playing just behind the front two and we think he’s great value to score any time given his good scoring form.

Struggling Austria are vulnerable

North Macedonia have won three of their last four matches (D1) and that form makes them a threat in this game. They’ve lost only two of their last 14 matches and that makes Austria worth opposing here.

Austria have won once in their last six matches and they come into this one winless in their last three. They’ve failed to win their last six games at the Euros and as a result we’re backing a 1-1 draw as our correct score prediction.

Questions raised around de Boer’s preparations

Ronald Koeman oversaw the resurrection of Dutch football as he guided Netherlands back to the big stage after failing for the last two major international tournaments, but the coronavirus-enforced delay of Euro 2020 has had a major impact on their chances this summer.

Koeman left to take charge of Barcelona and his successor – former Crystal Palace disaster Frank de Boer – hasn’t exactly instilled confidence in the nation. They have won only half of his ten matches in charge and a 4-2 thrashing at the hands of Turkey raised some serious questions.

It’s not just the on-pitch performances that have people concerned. Key duo Virgil van Dijk and Donny van de Beek are missing through injury and Frank de Boer controversially decided to not call up a replacement for late withdrawal van de Beek.

They are huge favourites in Group C, but I expect them to struggle against a Ukraine side that are tipped as dark horses of the tournament.

Ukraine turn a corner under Shevchenko

Ukraine have the talent and confidence to take advantage of the Dutch plight. They thrashed Cyprus 4-0 in their final pre-tournament warm-up game and are now unbeaten in six matches, including an excellent 1-1 draw away to France back in March.

Heavy defeats to Spain and France in 2020 came when the Ukraine squad was devastated by Covid-19 so can be overlooked, and their performance in qualifying was exceptional as they topped a group containing Serbia and European champions Portugal.

Yarmolenko can trouble Dutch defence

One man who could cause the Dutch defence some real problems is Andriy Yarmolenko. The 31-year-old hasn’t exactly set the Premier League alight since moving to West Ham but he tends to save his best performances for his country.

Only Ukraine manager Andriy Shevchenko has scored more goals than Yarmolenko for the national side, with the right winger bagging 40 times in 94 appearances. He scored two against Cyprus last time out and is well worth consideration at this price.

Ukraine to upset the odds in Amsterdam

As you might have gathered, I don’t think the Netherlands deserve to be such heavy favourites on Sunday. The inconsistency that plagued the last ten years has returned under de Boer and they are far too reliant on Memphis Depay going forward.

Ukraine are unbeaten in their last six games and with de Boer’s reign yielding only five wins from ten I’m backing a Ukraine double chance here. Four of Ukraine’s last six have ended in 1-1 draws so that’s my choice for a correct score prediction.

Background upheaval could distract Dundalk

Dundalk’s Premier Division match against second-bottom Waterford on Friday is being overshadowed by some off-the-pitch upheaval at Oriel Park that could impact the result.

The identity of the next Lilywhites’ permanent manager seems to be no clearer, despite the club reportedly finalising terms with an assistant for interim boss Jim Magilton over the last few days.

And with budget cuts expected to be announced over the coming weeks, a number of players look set be moved on next month.

All that uncertainty makes us wonder about whether the short price on the home side to add to Waterford’s woes is worth our while.

Marc Bircham was appointed Waterford manager four days after the Blues were battered 7-0 at home by Drogheda United.

The former QPR midfielder is trying to add some steel and foster enough pride to make results like that a thing of the past – but they haven’t yet earned a point under him.

If his instructions were to take no prisoners against Bohemians last time out then his players were listening as they racked up five yellow cards and a red during a 3-0 away defeat.

By all accounts it could have been worse and it would take leap of faith to think Waterford can get a result of any kind here.

However, the both teams to score option is worth a second look because Dundalk have not kept a clan sheet on their own patch since October.

It’s true that several of their home games last Autumn were at the Europa League group stage and against tough opposition.

But Magilton’s men have not blanked any of their six home opponents this season and did find away to concede two to the league’s second worst attacking force – Longford Town – last month.

Dundalk should still create enough chances to win this game, however, and we’ll take them to prevail 2-1 – a score they have achieved in two of their last three home games.

Estonia have hit form at just the right time as they seek to dethrone 13-time Baltic Cup champions Latvia in Tallinn on Thursday.

The final game of the three-nation tournament is effectively a final, although a draw would see Latvia retain their crown because they come into the game with a superior goal difference.

That would be harsh on Estonia, who have suddenly found some form after going two years without tasting victory at international level.

Thomas Häberli’s side followed up their 1-0 opening group phase win over Lithuania with a shock win over Euro 2020 finalists Finland in Helsinki and won’t be short on confidence ahead of this one.

Latvia top the table as a consequence of their 3-1 win over Lithuania last week and coach Dainis Kazakevics will be telling his players to forget the 7-1 mauling they received at the hands of Germany on Monday night.

That game almost didn’t take place with the green light given just a few hours before kick-off after one positive case of Covid-19 was discovered in the Latvian camp, although all subsequent tests were negative.

Estonia look the more organised unit on current form and will be highly motivated for this, but we forecast a low-scoring contest akin to many of these nations previous meetings in the competition.

Latvia know that a draw is enough and are likely to focus on keeping a clean sheet while Estonia have not found a way to score more than twice in any of their last nine games.

Santos seeks spectacular send-off for Euro champs

Portugal’s only home defeat in the last three years was inflicted on them by the world champions and that loss to France was only the third time in their last 19 at home that they had failed to score.

Portugal’s average margin of victory is almost two goals per game across their last 13 home fixtures, during which time they have hit the net 30 times.

Diogo Jota is a man in form for them with six goals in his last six starts after a Premier League season in which he bagged nine in 12 starts for Liverpool.

We can foresee the Anfield idol hitting the target here in a victory that should be in the region of 3-0 and will take Portugal -2 as our main selection on the three-way handicap.

And another blank could be on the cards in Prague against a team that haven’t scored in their last two.

The hosts have usually found the mark when on home soil, however, which is why we will take the Czech Republic to score Under 1.5 goals in the game.

Albania, who showed they could cope without first-choice goalkeeper Etrit Berisha and top defender Elseid Hysaj against Wales in Cardiff, have not conceded multiple goals on their travels since a 2-0 loss to Israel 11 games ago.

Therefore, we think the hosts might have to settle for a 1-0 win at best on Tuesday night.

Cyprus’ dry spell – failing to score in their last five internationals – gives the impression that one goal might be enough to win this for the hosts.

Portugal can prosper against Germans’ high defensive line

The Esperanças have kept clean sheets in four of their five finals games and have a solid platform to take the game to Germany on Sunday.

Germany have star quality too – and a great team spirit – but they tend to play a high line at the back that will be open to exploitation by Portugal’s pacy forwards.

We cannot believe Portugal are the underdogs in the 90 minutes betting and will take them to win without the need for extra-time and penalties.

If Portugal get the first goal, Germany will be required to gamble even more and that could lead to a greater margin of victory so we are recommending a 3-0 play on the correct score market.
